Leonard's Bakery

One of, if not THE most popular treat from Hawaii is the malasada. A malasada is a Portuguese confection. It's deep fried and coated with sugar. More recently, places that make malasadas have started stuffing them with cocoa, haupia (coconut), or custard.

There is a great debate on who makes the best malasadas. The one place that will always have a line of both tourists and locals is Leonard's Bakery, located in Kapahulu. Leonard's has been serving their world famous malasadas since 1952. The bakery has not undergone many changes since it first opened. The sign fronting the bakery is still the same as before, although it did receive a new paint job recently.

The building is very visible from the street. You can't miss it.

In addition to malasadas, Leonard's offers bakery items such as square cakes, brownies, and assorted cookies.

They also have pies, assorted pastries, and canned drinks for sale.

I have never tried these muffins before but they sure look tasty and moist.

One of my favorite items from Leonard's is their Pao Doce (sweet bread). They usually sell round loaves of it but now they are also offering it in squares (like dinner rolls).

If you are a big fan of malasadas, considering wearing a t-shirt with a box full of malasadas on it.

And here's what you were all waiting for - a picture of a malasada.

The malasadas are made to order so you may encounter a wait of a few minutes, but it's well worth it because malasadas are best consumed when they're warm.

Leonard's also operates mobile wagons throughout the island, where they make fresh malasadas. I've seen them at Windward Mall parking lot, the Navy Exchange Parking Lot, and Waikele parking lot.
