I get a lot of raised eyebrows and puzzled looks when I tell people that I ate ramen during my visit to New York. You would think that Hawaii's ramen houses would be way better than New York, given the number of Japanese people that live and visit Hawaii. But after our visit to Ippudo in New York, I don't think there is a ramen house here that can top it.
After reading many reviews about the long waits for a table in the evenings, we decided to go in between meal times - 3 pm to be exact. To our amazement, there was still a wait for a table, but it was only 15 minutes.
Open kitchen!
These Hirata Buns were highly recommended, and I can see why. The pork was amazing - crispy, juicy, and fatty.
I played it safe and ordered the Shiromaru Hakata Classic. I normally don't order this type of broth when I eat ramen, but I had to try it since it's the restaurant's most popular menu item. All I could say was "wow".
The hubby ordered the second most popular item on the menu - the Akamaru Modern. It's similar to what I ordered except that it came with Ippudo's "secret Umami Dama"miso paste, pork char siu, and other delightful ingredients. His was even more amazing than mine, and I would highly recommend it for first-timers.
