Shake Shack is a newcomer to burger world. According to their website, they started off as a hot dog cart in Madison Square Park (2001-03), then moved over to a permanent kiosk in 2004. Now they are a chain of fourteen restaurants, seven of which are in New York City.
They were named "Best Burger 2005" by New York Magazine, and they have a very strong following, as evidenced by the constant flow of customers at all hours of the day and night.
The Shake Shack we visited is located on West 44th Street in a neighborhood called "Hell's Kitchen". The neighborhood is not as bad as it sounds, although I'm sure it was a different story back in the day way before I was born. It is actually located very close to Broadway, and a lot of theater-goers stop here for dinner before curtain time.
At 3pm, this place was still bustling with hungry New Yorkers and tourists.
The hubby and I split this double cheeseburger. It was presented very nicely, and it tasted wonderful.
The burger was cooked medium, as burgers should be.
Crinkle cut fries - crispy and hot.
I normally don't drink shakes but how could I not since this place is called Shake Shack.
