Visit Los Angeles: UMAMIcatessen

You may be wondering what kind of name is "UMAMIcatessen"?

First of all, what is "umami"? Wikipedia defines Umami as "is one of the five basic tastes, together with sweet, sour, bitter, and salty". It is derived from the Japanese language, which defines umami as a "pleasant, savory taste". Click here for a detailed explanation of umami.

After reading about "umami", I still can't figure out exactly what it is. If someone gave me something with the "umami" flavor, I would not be able to recognize it. But you do not need an appreciation of the concept in order to appreciate the offerings at UMAMIcatessen. If you have an affinity for juicy burgers, UMAMIcatessen is calling your name.

I love how the burger buns are branded with a big "U".

Umami Burger - shiitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, roasted tomato, parmesan crisp, umami ketchup

Cross section of the Umami Burger - ain't she a beauty?

Manly Burger - Beer-cheddar cheese, smoke-salt onion strings, bacon lardons

Onion Rings

Truffle Fries

French Fries

The dessert menu - fried to order donuts!!

Tres leches, cajeta, ceylon cinnamon cake donut

Everything was out of this world. Umami's burger is ridiculously moist, tender, and juicy. Their fries are crispy and you must consume these with their house-made umami ketchup. The tres leches cake donut was the best of the three donuts we tried - I would definitely save room for it.
