Free Birds (Rated PG), a Dove "Family-Approved" movie, is in theaters now!
In this hilarious, adventurous buddy comedy for audiences of all ages, directed by Jimmy Hayward (Horton Hears a Who!), two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks must put aside their differences and team up to travel back in time to change the course of history - and get turkey off the Thanksgiving menu for good. Reggie lives on a farm constantly trying to convince his fellow turkeys of their inevitable fate, until one day he finds himself the famous pardoned turkey, living at Camp David with the President and his daughter, indulging in Chuck E. Cheese's pizza and watching TV. The life of luxury doesn't last too long, however, as he is soon turkey-napped by Jake to go on a special mission to save turkeys from becoming the main dish on Thanksgiving.
They soon find themselves back in time with the help of an egg-shaped time machine named S.T.E.V.E.
It's just days before the first Thanksgiving when they meet Jenny, along with a flock of turkeys, who are trying hard not to become dinner for the Pilgrims.
Jake and Reggie end up devising a plan to ensure that the turkeys will be safe for Thanksgiving, but as expected, the plan fails.
Disappointed in himself, Jake goes back to the future, but thanks to the effects of time travel, he is able to figure out how to prevent turkeys from being on the Thanksgiving menu for good.
My kids enjoyed the movie. They thought the talking turkeys were funny, and they always laughed whenever the President's daughter was tired and would immediately fall asleep. They also liked the scene which involved Jake and another turkey who tried to one-up each other through moves and dances.
There were several humorous moments throughout the film, and I especially enjoyed the pop culture references, but given the star power behind the voices, I thought the movie would be a lot funnier than it actually was.
However, I did enjoy the lesson taught about never giving up, even after having experienced great failure, and the way that was depicted in the movie was very touching.
Overall, Free Birds was a fun movie with some adult humor mixed in that both kids and grown ups may enjoy.
