North Shore grinds

The North Shore is known for big waves in the winter, and crystal clear waters in the summer, but, it is also home to some of the best eats on the island.

Whenever I go to the North Shore, which is at least once a year, I always stop at these 4 eateries:

PAALAA KAI BAKERY

Our first stop to the North Shore is always Paalaa Kai Bakery in Waialua.  Their most popular item is the snow puffy.  It's a flaky pastry, filled with cold creme and topped with a swirl of chocolate fudge (the best part!) and powdered sugar.  Be careful when you take a bite - don't inhale through your mouth otherwise you'll choke on the powdered sugar like how I did!

We always eat one at the bakery, and then place an order for a dozen to be picked up on our way back into town.

On this past visit, we decided to try their malasadas.  After taking a bite, the first thing that came to mind was "WOW, these are better than Leonard's!".  If only they would make these made-to-order like how Leonard's does....

PAALAA KAI MARKET

After inhaling our snow puffies, we always walk next door to Paalaa Kai Market to pick up a tray of their crispy fried chicken.  The breading they use is a perfect blend of spices that will make your mouth water.

MACKY'S SWEET SHRIMP TRUCK

Just at the entrance to Haleiwa town (if you are coming from Wahiawa) you'll see Mackey's Shrimp Truck on the right hand side, just before 7-Eleven.  They offer about 6 different variations of their sweet shrimp plates, but my favorite is the #2 butter garlic shrimp.  It's heaven on a plate!

MATSUMOTO'S SHAVE ICE

No visit to the North Shore (or to Oahu!) is complete without a cup of Matsumoto's shave ice.  There is always a line out the door, but don't let that scare you away.  The line moves quicker than it looks and once you take your first bite of shave ice, you'll be so happy that you waited in line for this.  My go-to flavors are strawberry and lilikoi, with ice cream on the bottom, of course!
