As with any Disney•Pixar movie, I expect a lot of humor and heart, and The Good Dinosaur did not disappoint.
From the opening scene, in which an asteroid appears to be on its way to pummel earth, the audience was entertained, and throughout the movie we laughed a lot. My kids giggled when Buck, Arlo's mischievous brother, broke through his egg, and they thought it was hilarious when Arlo was tasked with a job by a T-Rex. And the adults were laughing out loud too - especially during a scene that involved a creepy looking bug, and another where Arlo and his human friend, Spot, came upon some mind-bending fruit.
The humor was continuous, and so was the heart - the exchanges amongst Arlo's Apatosaurus family (of which he is the youngest sibling), as well as the bond that eventually builds between Spot and Arlo, were just a few of the touching moments.
What I did not expect, however, was just how heart-tugging so many of the moments would be, to the point where I shed so many tears. I cried during several parts of the movie, as Arlo went on his journey to make his mark in the family.
We see what he has to overcome - natural disasters, predators, and his own fears.
The trepidation in Arlo's mind as he tries to prove what a good dinosaur he is is painful and obvious, but how he surmounts that fear is what really helped him realize the kind of dinosaur he truly is.
Ultimately, Arlo does prove himself to be not only a good dinosaur, but a courageous, kind, and selfless one.
