Homemade Marshmallows for the Holidays!

Ever try making your own marshmallows?  They are not as difficult as you think and taste totally different than the store bought variety.  Don't get me wrong, I love ready made marshmallows, but these homemade ones are melt in your mouth kind soft.  The recipe I used called for peppermint extract so they were minty as well!

Basically, after you heat the sugar water to a boil, you mix it in with dissolved gelatin until you get something white and fluffy like this:

This gooey concoction then needs to be spread in a well greased pan and topped with a sprinkling of powder sugar to cool and set for a minimum of 3 hours.  Usually, I see homemade marshmallows cut up in cubes, but for a special occasion, you can get your cookie cutters and candy melts out to make some fun design and shapes.

I was inspired to make these cute Frostys when my friend who shares a birthday on Christmas reposted @iamafoodblog's cute creations.  I thought these little guys would be the perfect birthday gift.  I had a little bit of trouble with piping the faces, but I am still happy with how they turned out.

Have fun!
