When my daughter was born in 2007, I relied on a digital
thermometer by placing it under her arm.
Thankfully she didn’t get a fever too often. Having misplaced the digital thermometer, I
put an infrared ear thermometer on my baby registry when I was expecting my
son. Friends of mine raved about it and
it was what my pediatrician was using. For
the most part it’s great, but I often have difficulty positioning it in the ear
canal for an accurate reading - especially if my son is sleeping.
At his last checkup, I noticed the nurse using a thermometer
on his forehead and made a mental note to look into it. It was perfect timing that I received the
Exergen TemporalScanner, a temporal artery thermometer, to review.
The TemporalScanner is simple to use. To take a temperature, remove the protective
cap and place the probe flat on the center of the forehead. Hold down the SCAN button and gently slide
the thermometer to the hairline. Release
the SCAN button and read the temperature.
I needed a couple of practice swipes as I would let go of the SCAN
button too soon. But after a bit of
practice, I was able to take my sleeping son's temperature and my own with no
problems. I also really liked the soft
glow display so I could keep the lights dim in the room. Other cool features include the option to silence the beep; automatic retaining of the last eight temperature
readings for instant recall to check on fever progression; and ability to
switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius modes.
How the scanner works is that it captures the heat from
the skin over the temporal artery. The
temporal artery is connected to the heart via the carotid artery and also has
the constant blood flow needed to take an accurate measurement. Exergen states the accuracy of this
thermometer for all ages is supported by more than 50 peer-reviewed published
studies and more than one billion temperatures taken annually in hospitals and
clinics.
I have already swapped out our old ear thermometer in favor of the TemporalScanner. I don't look forward to anyone getting a fever, but at least when I take a temperature, I'll have the confidence it will be quick and accurate with no fuss.
