Alice Through the Looking Glass Review

My daughter and I were both very excited to see the advanced screening of "Alice Through the Looking Glass," the Disney sequel to "Alice in Wonderland" released in 2010.  In this new story, the all-star cast of Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter return and we meet Time (Sacha Baron Cohen) who is part human and part clock.

In "Alice Through the Looking Glass," Alice is brought back to Underland to help save the Hatter.  Alice travels back into time on her journey where she (as well as the audience) pieces together the mysterious disappearance of the Hatter's family.  Along this adventure we also learn the Queen of Heart's backstory and the origin of her strangely large head.

The movie is presented in 3D and the effects were amazing.  I felt like I was inside the movie!  While I really enjoyed the turbulent ride of the story, I thought it was a little all over the place which makes sense in a nonsensical place like Underland.  Overall, I felt a little underwhelmed and had expected more action and more scares like in the previous film.

My nine year old felt completely different.  First off, she was only 4 when she saw "Alice in Wonderland" and she didn't even remember it.  I'm pretty sure if she did, she would have remembered being terrified of the Jabberwocky.  Secondly, she understood and appreciated the silly humor of the movie.  She was mesmerized by Alice's adventures and locked into the story.  She loved it.  Which made the entire experience worth it.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" is rated PG13 with a running time of 113 minutes.  Now showing everywhere.
