I already had a great sugar cookie recipe I could use and I figured if I kept the heart in a single color, the process would be easier and still pretty cute. The first problem I encountered was that my sugar cookie recipe was expressly a no chill recipe (which is why I chose it in the first place. Who has time for chilling?!). I really should have followed the directions and froze the hearts to keep them firm so they would not get misshapen when rolled in the remaining cookie dough. Lesson learned.
The next issue was the result of being too lazy to make an egg wash; partly because I was just that lazy and partly because I didn't want to waste an egg. I learned that substituting water did not work in making the sprinkles stick to the dough. Note to self: just make the egg wash!
I had to giggle when I looked at my end result of smushed hearts, but I really did have fun making them. They tasted great and the kids loved them! Now, they each want to make their own heart colors so I'm looking forward to our next baking project together. <3
