New Ice Cream Shop in Kaimuki - 8 Half Desserts

8 Half Desserts (named because of the location between 8th and 9th Avenues) just opened in Kaimuki a few weeks ago, but after glancing at the shop's photos on Instagram, I knew I saw or tried owner Robert Borling's cool, homemade creations elsewhere.

You may have seen or tried them too - mango sorbet with shoyu at Shiro's, or one of the popular ice cream pies at Kuni's (and at many other restaurants throughout the island),

As soon as we stepped into the cozy 8 Half Desserts, Robert kept giving us sample after sample of ice cream and sorbets - lychee, mango, acai, green tea...

Two of my kids didn't hesitate on their flavor of choice - Cookies n Cream!

A serving in a bowl is huge - and you get to top it with sprinkles and M&M's!  My sons could've easily shared a single bowl.

Add your toppings!

My middle son opted for Lychee Sorbet.

My husband suggested he sprinkle on some Li Hing Powder, and Robert said he should also sprinkle Furikake.

Furikake?!

Robert ended up giving my husband and I a spoonful of Lychee sorbet to sample with furikake sprinkled on before we actually sprinkled it on my son's cone.

Wow - it was surprisingly good!  And my son loved the lychee with both the furikake and li hing powder on.

I ended up getting Mango ice cream, but since I was feeling adventurous...

I added Shoyu!  Yes - mango ice cream with shoyu drizzled on.  I was too afraid to try the Mango with Shoyu when I saw it at Shiro's, but I'm glad I finally decided to try it.

It was so yummy.  My husband said it reminded him of his childhood.

While indulging in the ice cream at the single table outside, Robert brought out a sample of Pineapple Li Hing Mui.

Now that was like a throwback to my childhood!  It was so yummy!

8 Half Desserts also offers Ice Cream Pies (whole and slices) and Cookie Sandwiches.

Prices are a bit on the high side, but I thought it was totally worth it for the delicious, homemade ice cream confections.

As mentioned, it's a tiny shop with very limited seating, and the parking lot is small too (although you can opt for street parking), but what 8 Half Desserts lack in space, it more than makes up for in service and delightful dessert offerings.

Limited seating outside
I can't wait to go back and try out more ice cream flavors!
