Kuliouou Ridge Trail

Ever since my friend told me that Kuliouou Ridge Trail is a "real" hike in her book, I've been wanting to try it.  The longest hike I did previously was the Makiki Valley Loop Trail which was about 2.5 miles in distance.  The ridge trail is approximately 4-5 miles roundtrip with many switchbacks ascending approximately 2000 feet.  Luckily, the trail is also mostly shady.  For the average hiker who takes breaks and pictures, be prepared to spend about 3-4 hours completing this hike.

To get there, follow Kuliouou Road and take a right on Kalaau Place and find street parking.

The trailhead also marks the spot for the Kuliouou Valley Trail (2 miles)

Lots of roots and rocks on this trail.

Our first glimpse of a view.

About 2/3 of the way up you will find a couple of covered picnic tables and the cutest swing!  We had a snack on our way back down.

The last of the shade on the trail.

A look back.  The view is what kept me going.

The sets of stairs can be challenging both going up and down.  Take your time.

At the top!  An amazing view that stretches from Diamond Head to the Windward coast.

Worth every step!

Lucky we live Hawaii!

    1. Yes! We saw plenty of children and families on the hike. Make sure to bring lots of water and snacks.
