Easy Sloppy Joes from Scratch

The first time my oldest son tried Sloppy Joes was at a birthday party when he was 3 years old, and he loved it.  I always wanted to try and make them myself, and when I found a super easy recipe for making Sloppy Joes from scratch in a Southern Living Cookbook the other day, I finally decided to make some.

Making the Sloppy Joes was almost as easy as opening a can of that popular sauce!  I really enjoyed the flavor of these Sloppy Joes (the cookbook version of the recipe did not list the pickled jalapenos & liquid in the recipe, but I'd probably try it next time since I love spicy!), and everyone in my family devoured them, except for my middle son.

I'll definitely be making these again soon!

Easy Sloppy Joes from Scratch (recipe from Southern Living)

Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 1/4 c ketchup
  • 1/2 c bottled barbecue sauce
  • 1 T Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons chopped pickled jalapeƱos (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon liquid from pickled jalapeƱos (optional)
  • 8 hamburger buns, toasted
Directions:
  • Cook ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat until crumbly and no longer pink; drain well.
  • Mix together the beef, diced tomatoes, ketchup, barbecue sauce, and Worcestershire sauce in the skillet. Simmer for 15 minutes on medium heat. Sauce will thicken (the longer you simmer, the thicker the sauce will get).
  • Serve on toasted buns.
