What started out as a coffee truck in 2011, the Curb is now proudly delivering "good coffee and great company" in three locations on Oahu - Paradise Palms on the University of Hawaii Manoa campus, Kaimuki, and Kailua. The Kailua location opened just a few weeks ago in a space formerly occupied by Peet's Coffee & Tea on Hekili Street. Peet's last 2 years in this spot - hopefully The Curb will have much better luck, as its a locally owned company that delivers superior coffee products.
The Curb is located at 143 Hekili Street, a recently developed commercial building that is also home to Mahaloha Burger and Crepes No Ka Oi.
They have bar style seating inside, but it's much more fun to sit outside to people-watch.
The inside is pretty minimal and simple. As you can see below, the barista has a pretty good sense of humor.
Since we were the only ones in the shop, we took our time to talk coffee with the barista and sample some of their coffees.
Although they have drip coffee on the menu, we went with the pour over coffee to get a taste of what good coffee should taste like. We watched the barista grind the coffee, weigh it, and calculate how much water he needs to use (there is a certain grams of coffee to ounce of water ratio that they follow). The black base on the bottom is actually a scale with a timer, because they also watch the timer when pouring the water slowly over the coffee grinds. It actually takes a few minutes to brew just one cup of pour over coffee.
I must admit, it was a pretty darn good cup of coffee. Because it's double the price of a regular cup of drip coffee, I probably won't be getting pour over coffee on a regular basis, but I'd definitely want to get it again as a special treat when I have the time to relax and enjoy it.
The Curb also sells bags of coffee, coffee gadgets ...
