New in Kapahulu: Hawaii Curry

Whenever I'm craving Japanese style curry (the only type of curry I'll eat), I usually head to Curry House Coco Ichibanya.  But today I decided to give a Hawaii Curry a chance.

They recently opened on Kapahulu Avenue, in a spot that has been a revolving door for restaurants. It used to be a Thai restaurant, and more recently a ramen ya.

But now it's home to "Hawaii Curry", and I hope this restaurant finds success here, because it just may be my new favorite place for Japanese style curry.

To find this place, head makai (south) on Kapahulu Avenue and look for the yellow building on the right with signs advertising $5 bentos at the entrance.  The building does not have a parking lot, so you have to hunt for a parking space along Kapahulu Avenue or on one of the heavily-populated side streets.

The dining room is spacious and comfortable for dine-in customers.

We tried the french fries which were served hot and slightly crispy. Not bad, but it's a small portion for $3.

Since they didn't have a chicken karaage curry combo (which is my go-to at Curry House), I made my own combo by ordering the Mama's Curry set and a side order of chicken karaage.

The chicken karaage was crispy and not too greasy.

The curry was a home-style beef-based curry with onions, carrots, and slow-cooked beef, served with pickled veggies and boiled spinach.  It was excellent! I liked the consistency (not too thick) and flavor. Very oishi.

My friend ordered the Big Island Chicken Katsu Curry set, which consisted of Mama's Curry with chicken katsu, topped with keema curry and cheese. This also came with boiled spinach and pickled veggies.  In case you are wondering what keema curry is - it's a thicker, more concentrated curry w/ground pork and spices. It has the consistence of chili.

The great thing about Hawaii Curry is that they have brown rice!

Here's what they offer for dessert (we were too full to try one!):

On my next visit I'm planning to try their $5 bento. What a deal!

I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who likes Japanese style curry!
