Last year Sophie's Gourmet Hawaiian Pizzeria opened in Hawaii Kai, and I could not wait to try it, because a lot of people thought it was better than Pieology. Really? Pieology is currently my favorite pizzeria on Oahu (read my review here), so I came to Sophie's with high expectations.
At Sophie's, you can build your own pizza or choose from one of their specialty pizzas. If you want to build your own pizza, it's $10.95 for 3 toppings, or $12.95 for up to 5 toppings. If you can't decide, you can choose one of their "locally inspired specialty pizzas" for $12.95.
All pizzas are assembled from start to finish right before your eyes....
Here's my half cheese / half Lava Tube pizza. I had requested it on their signature "guava-infused" crust. Honestly, it did not taste anything like guava. I had also told the employee numerous times that I did not like spicy foods and didn't want anything spicy on my pizza, yet the pizza definitely had a zing to it.
The hubby tried the Seoul Mate, which is the pizza that inspired the owner to open the restaurant - Korean bulgogi (BBQ beef), kimchee, mozzarella, goat cheese, onions, fresh herb olive oil, oven-roasted green onions and parmesan cheese. Sounds good in theory. But the hubby didn't care for it.
Verdict? We weren't that impressed with our pizzas. There was no "wow" factor and the pizzas took longer to cook than at Pieology.
Pieology still reigns supreme in my book. Can't beat the prices for both their signature or custom built pies, and the lightening speed at which their pies are cooked and delivered to your table. When you've got two hungry toddlers with you, speed counts!
