Last night I got to enjoy a menu tasting of Hawaii's newest farm-to-table izakaya from Japan, Tsukada Nojo! Tsukada Nojo is a popular izakaya chain from Japan and opened its first Hawaii location on Kalakaua Avenue, across the street from Century Center. The menu is organized into seven major categories: hot pots, small cold plates, small hot plates, salads, large plates, rice & ramen, and desserts. The dishes at Tsukada Nojo as prepared by Executive Chef Shingo Sato incorporates island-grown ingredients whenever possible.
The tasting I enjoyed introduced Tsukada Nojo's new happy hour aptly named Farmer's Hours. The menu offers nightly specials featuring fresh local ingredients prepared with modern Japanese sensibilities from 9pm to closing. I especially liked the savory Nikumaki Rice Balls - a pork belly wrapped rice ball in sweet soy ginger sauce. My kids would love them! The chicken veggie tacos were not only pretty to look at it, but surprisingly quite refreshing. I liked how crisp the slices of watermelon radish tasted with the chicken, tomatoes, red onion, and cilantro. My favorites were the two ramens I tried. Both the veggie and chicken paitan shoyu ramen were served piping hot and I appreciated the savory broths and firm and chewy noodles. Delicious!
Tsukada Nojo is open from 5-11pm Monday - Thursday, 5pm-12am Friday and Saturday, and 5-10pm on Sunday.
