Wonder Woman Movie Review
I vaguely remember reading Wonder Woman comics and watching the television show starring Lynda Carter as a youth, but the image of Wonder Woman with her gauntlets, tiara, and lasso have stayed with me all these years. She is the superhero the little girl inside me still admires and respects. When Wonder Woman, played by Gal Gadot, made her debut in "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" I thought it was the best part of the movie and so I was very excited to attend Wednesday night's screening with my children.
What I enjoyed most about the movie was Wonder Woman's backstory growing up as Princess Diana on the secret island of Themyscira - home of the Amazon warriors. Their island is sheltered from the outside world until an American pilot crashes into the waters offshore and Diana saves his life. When Diana learns of the war raging in the outside world, she leaves with the pilot determined to end the war.
The fighting sequences in the complex battle scenes were most impressive. The actors cast to play the Amazon warriors included stunt performers and pro athletes; and were trained in archery, sword fighting, horseback riding, and martial arts. The choreography and the slow motion capture of the fighting was stunning...and not short on violence (albeit mostly bloodless violence). The film is rated PG-13 for sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content.
Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins, was also a hit with both my children. At one point my son couldn't sit still so I thought he might be bored, but then he turned to me and whispered, "I'm so excited! Wonder Woman is going to fight the bad guy!" I love that he sees Wonder Woman as no more/no less than any other male superhero and I'm thrilled my daughter now has a superhero she looks up to. As we walked out of the movie, she exclaimed she wanted to be Wonder Woman for Halloween. I totally understood because, well, I want to be Wonder Woman for Halloween.
Seeing the movie was nostalgic for me and I was captivated with the story telling from start to end. Throughout the movie is unending action peppered with comedic moments. We are definitely excited to see more of Wonder Woman in Warner Bros. Pictures' upcoming feature film, "Justice League."
