SUP Yoga with Yoga Kai

When I first heard about Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP) Yoga classes, I was pretty intimidated yet very curious.  Although I practice yoga, I had only ever been stand up paddling twice and I’m not a big swimmer.  In the end, my curiosity won out and I rounded up a friend to give it a try.

My friend and I met up with Ashley, an instructor from Yoga Kai, at Magic Island for the sunset session.  As we carried our BOGA boards and anchors into the water, I couldn’t help but feel super excited.  I enjoy learning new things, especially when it comes to workouts as it helps keep me motivated.

I noticed that poses that I have done hundreds of times before were much more difficult and I was very focused and in tune with my body because of the moving water.  I must admit, I felt a little bit stressed because I just didn’t want to fall in the water.  But inevitably, I fell in and to my surprise I felt total relief.  Getting back on was just the natural thing to do and now that I was relaxed, it was ten times more fun.

After the yoga session, Ashley gave us some time to play around and practice some challenging poses.  She took pictures of our efforts because we all know, pictures or it never happened!  Honestly, seeing the pictures from our session was great.  I felt strong and beautiful and it gave me a sense of accomplishment.

My husband asked me why I took the class and my immediate response was, “because it’s fun!”  It’s both amazing and calming being in the water and under the sun practicing yoga…and to do it in Hawaii?  Well, sure makes me feel lucky.
