Conner Prairie, Indiana's first Smithsonian Institute affiliate, offers a variety of activities and hands-on experiences to over 400,000 guests annually. Visitors can learn about life in Indiana in the 1800s, immerse themselves in Indian culture, and so much more.
While our family was visiting Indy, we were fortunate to visit Conner Prairie and take part in the 34th annual Headless Horseman Fall Festival, which continues Oct. 26-29 from 6-9pm.
This fun Conner Prairie Halloween Fest (aka Conner Scairie) welcomes thousands of guests to go on a haunted hayride while being chased by the Headless Horseman.
There are many scary creatures awaiting riders as they traverse the hay ride path.
The Headless Horseman makes several appearances. I got caught off guard each time he came to terrorize the riders.
My two older kids were not scared, but my youngest was a little scared. There was a kid on our hay ride who was absolutely terrified and had to be reassured that the Headless Horseman was not going to hurt him.
We rode the hay ride as the sun was setting, so it wasn't as scary as if we were riding in complete darkness. I'm sure my kids would have been a lot more scared if it was dark.
The fest also included a number of Halloween games and entertainment.
Weather-permitting, guests can also take a ride on the 1859 Balloon Voyage (on the evening we went it was too windy, so no balloon rides!).
New for this year's event is a 7-acre, 300,000-square foot corn maze! There are two routes you can take - a long one, which could take up to an hour, and a small one, which takes up to 30 minutes. We did the shorter route since we had to be at our hay ride at a certain time.
Thankfully, you are given a copy of the maze so if you follow it from the start, you can easily and quickly find your way out.
