Horseback Riding with Happy Trails Hawaii

When my son asked for a horse for Christmas, I was a bit dumbfounded as he had never shown an interest before.  When I was able to speak again, I told him no, but that we could go horseback riding instead. 

A friend of mine had rode with Happy Trails and was happy with her experience so I researched the company.  Luckily for us, their minimum rider age is 6 and Cade had just turned 7 so it was perfect.  Booking was a cinch using their online system, but you'll need the height and weight of your riders. 

We arrived at the Happy Trails ranch on the north shore at the required 30 minutes before our ride time.  There was parking and portable potties on site.  Guests are required to wear closed toe shoes and long pants are suggested.  Shorts are okay, but they do suggest a cargo length for comfort.  Guests are also provided with a saddle bag to hold small items, but backpacks and SLR cameras are not allowed on the ride.  Helmets are provided, but optional.

One of the guides gave us a quick tutorial on how to ride a horse and instructed us to keep one hand on the reigns at all times.  I was a bit nervous for the kids, but they took to it with ease.  Once my worry over my children subsided, I began to worry for myself as I never rode a horse before.  It took me awhile to calm down -on the inside- and breathe normally, but I eventually did and really enjoyed the ride along the quiet and pretty trail.  At a couple of points, we were treated to very remarkable ocean views. 





This was a very fun activity for myself and my children.  The kids both raved about their experience.  While they weren't interested in riding lessons, they both said they would definitely want to go again.  Perfect activity for the family, friends, or for your out of town visitors!
