One of the reasons my husband and I loved dining at Izakaya Gaku was the delicious sushi and sashimi prepared by Sushi Chef Nobu-san. We were both super sad and excited that he would be leaving to open his own place, Izakaya Uosan.
Located on Kapiolani in the building with the Original Pancake House and Gyukaku, they validate for the first two hours. I love the clean and natural look of the izakaya. There's a mixture of tables and booth seating as well as a sushi counter that seats 10 and a semi private tatami rooms that seats 10.

Their list of daily specials is handwritten in both English and Japanese and presented with the hard covered menu. Inside the menu there's sashimi and sushi, sushi rolls, grilled and fried dishes as well as meat dishes and rice dishes. Definitely something for everyone!
We started with top shell, fresh oysters, fish bones, and deep fried mochi. My favorite cooked dish that night was the butterfish with the house-made miso macadamia sauce. It was prepared perfectly and I loved the nutty creamy sauce. It's served with cream cheese which was different, but paired nicely! The omelet over rice was also very nice and filling.

My husband had the omakase while I ordered my favorite pieces of nigiri - salmon, kinme, and uni. I've been scarred by bad uni before so I am careful where to order uni from. Izakaya Uosan is one of the few places in Hawaii that I will have it because I know that it will be of the highest quality as with all the fish they serve. If you love sushi, definitely recommend you checking this restaurant out!
