Visit Sydney - Forgotten Songs

Hidden in an alleyway, Forgotten Songs by Michael Thomas Hill, is a public artwork permanently on display showcasing 120 suspended bird cages accompanied by the sound recordings of extinct or threatened bird species of central Sydney.

The art is to celebrate those birds living in central Sydney before they were gradually forced out as a result of European settlement.  The artist’s intention was to return the bird sounds to the city.

Seeing the bird cages and hearing the forgotten songs was a somber experience, but amazing and beautiful to witness in person.  The songs of the birds change from day to night and on the ground you can read the names of the 50 affected bird species.
