Synopsis:
The tender story of an Irish musician and a Czech immigrant drawn together by their shared love of music is the core of this vital and surprising contemporary musical. Over the course of one fateful week, their unexpected friendship and collaboration evolves into a powerful but complicated romance, heightened by the raw emotion of the songs they create together.
The musical seemed to be a lot more humorous than what I remembered the movie to be, but the story overall was still full of emotion, tugging at heartstrings as we watched the relationship between the Guy and Girl unfold and swiftly develop into something stronger.
The set was minimal, allowing for the entire cast and their performances - whether vocal, instrumental, or both, to shine. Jarren Amian (Guy) and Melani Carrie (Girl) were outstanding.
I could feel Guy's heartache during Leave, and Girl's pain during The Hill.
The supporting cast, which also served as the orchestra, gave great performances as well.
My husband mentioned two songs from the movie he wished were performed, but all I needed to hear was Falling Slowly.
It's hard not to imagine the emotions going through the Guy's and Girl's heads and hearts when you hear them singing Falling Slowly, especially during the reprise.
I thought Once was energetic, amusing, and emotional, and I've been listening to the soundtrack on repeat ever since I watched the musical!
Shows continue through December 8. For tickets, click here.
Mahalo to the sponsor for the complimentary tickets.
