Memorial Day weekend for many marks the start of summer. And while E will definitely grow up knowing the meaning of Memorial Day as something more than just a three-day weekend, it was still a nice opportunity to spend time together as a family and enjoy the warm weather.
Since E has been making it an inglorious habit of waking up around 5am (in his defense he was also sick for over a week and has molars coming in. yes, all four came in at once) this weekend we also tried cutting his naps down to one a day. This has made it easier to schedule activities and at least he’s waking up closer to 6am. But we’ll see how long that lasts.
So here’s how E and his parents spent the first weekend of summer basking in the 80 degree Hawaii weather.
Went to the beach. It was E’s first outing outside of the house in over two months and he loved it. We went before the weekend so it wasn’t crowded and we could easily stay 10-20 feet away from people both on the sand and in the water. E loved being in the water and splashing and picking rocks out of the sand.
Get plate lunch. On the way home from the beach we picked up plate lunches from Pioneer Saloon (pro tip, call in your order before you get there!). Hamburger steak with ponzu for me, chili chicken for the dad.
Get shave ice. “When it’s hot. Super hot. Sticky salty air hot. You’ve got to go. We’ve got to go. To get some shave ice.” We’ve probably read that book to E five times a day the last few weeks so of course we had to took him to get some SHAVE ICE. We dropped E off at his grandparent’s house and were waiting there promptly at 11am for Shimazu Shave Ice to open. Of course we paid a little extra for the plastic holder but it was so worth it for E to enjoy his first shave ice (I’m sure of many) on grandma’s front porch!
BBQ. What is Memorial Day without a barbecue? Fortunately for us E’s dad is a pro at the grill and whipped up an assortment of our faves including all sorts of meats, grilled veggies and mom’s fave — bacon asparagus.
Hit the pool. With pools still closed we had to resort to our own inflatable pool and water table in the yard but E wasn’t complaining. Bonus points for the sun, splashing and all the effort to climb in and out of the pool for tiring him out.
We didn't get a chance to visit Punchbowl and his great uncles this weekend but absolutely plant to in the next few weeks. Thank you to our heroes, the men and women who died serving our country. This weekend is truly in your memory.
