Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival (HFWF) today is accepting submissions for its Hawai‘i Gas Presents Localicious® Recipe & Video Contest. Now through September 21, 2020, keiki can submit a healthy, original recipe that includes locally-grown, raised or caught product(s).
Open to students in grades 4-12, the contest will screen submitted recipes in two age groups (grades 4-8 and grades 9-12). The top three finalists from each age category will earn invitations to submit a three to four minute video showcasing their skills in the kitchen, presentation flare and the final dish. The dishes will be evaluated by a committee of celebrity chefs based on a criteria measuring creativity, simplicity, healthiness, deliciousness, affordability and origin.
Inspiring the next generation of chefs, the winners in each category will be announced at a live virtual event on November 7, 2020.
“One of the key objectives of our HFWF mission is to inspire the future generation of future generations of chefs, farmers, entrepreneurs and more,” said Denise Yamaguchi, CEO of Hawai‘i Food & Wine Festival. “We’re thrilled that this contest continues to be a success and we’re excited to see the creativity of keiki chefs come to life through videos as they create delicious masterpieces cooking with gas, which is the preferred clean energy source for veteran and young chefs alike.”
Cash scholarships will be awarded for first, second and third place winners in grades 9-12 and culinary-themed prizes will be awarded to first, second and third place winners in grades 4-8. There will also be a surprise prize given as an overall People’s Choice Award, which will be determined by an online voting period from October 22 to November 6, 2020.
“It’s important to Hawai‘i Gas to continue to support the next generation of culinary leaders in our community,” said Mustafa Demirbag, Hawai‘i Gas executive director of sales and marketing. “We are faced with unique challenges with the impact of COVID-19, which has highlighted the importance of strengthening local agriculture and farming for our state’s future. The Localicious® Recipe & Video Contest serves as a creative and educational outlet that will inspire young chefs in our community.”
