Ever since word got out on social media that there was a pop up in Mitsukawa Marketplace showcasing fresh made to order tendon (Japanese tempura bowls), tempura-enthusiasts have been lining up to get their fix.
The family and I headed to Waikiki this past weekend because I really wanted to try the tempura that everyone's been talking about. Upon our arrival just after opening, there were about 6 people in line. After I placed our order, we waited another 30 minutes for our food - not nearly as long as when they first opened last month.
I ordered the mixed vege tempura bowl (pictured above) and a combo consisting of a Shrimp bowl and shoyu ahi poke for the hubby (pictured below).
Since the seating area in Mitsukawa Marketplace is not open, we down the road and pulled over to the side to eat our tempura bowls. It wasn't crispy, but it sure was delicious! The magic is definitely in the tempura sauce, a homemade sauce which is a slow simmered, sweet soy sauce with Bonito flakes.
Now that they have extended their pop up through April 15, we are looking forward to visiting them again!
