Tiger Sugar, the boba chain which has its origins in Taiwan, recently opened its first location in Hawaii a few weekends ago. My friend sent me a picture of the line that snaked around the corner of the building. I've said it before and I'll say it again - it's amazing how boba shops continue to pop up on an island as small as ours, and how wildly popular these boba shops continue to be.
I used to be a huge boba fan in my younger years, but I've cut back now that I'm getting old and cannot metabolize carbs and fat as efficiently as before. But since I was in the area during my lunch break, I decided to give this place a try.
Unlike many other boba shops, Tiger Sugar has a small menu, and they don't seem to allow you to customize your drinks like at other boba shops. I ordered their signature drink, which is the Black Sugar Boba + Pearl Milk with Cream Mousse, and I asked if the sweetness level could be customized, and the cashier said no, there is only one sweetness level. But back to their menu, it's split up into two types of drinks: Black Sugar Milk series and Tiger Sugar High Quality Tea Series.
What I found interesting about Tiger Sugar is that their boba drinks automatically come with a combination of both large boba, and small boba (which they call 'pearls'). I didn't realize that until I took my first sip! They also use organic whole milk instead of creamer, which I think yields a smoother, more natural-tasting drink. Also, their black sugar milk series drinks do not have tea in them. This is a plus if you're avoiding caffeine, and it's also good for the kiddies.
In other cities, people have been waiting in line for hours to get their hands on this. For me personally, it was great to try it once to see what the hype is about, but since I have a personal preference for fruity green teas, I probably won't be a regular here. Although I may need to return to try a bag of their black sugar popcorn!
