The best way to experience authentic Italian food in NYC is to dine with Italians, and that's what we did when we went to Mercato Trattoria.
Our friend Sal took us to this Michelin Guide-recommended eatery, where we tried several dishes and ingredients for the first time.

The Tiella Pugliese was my favorite. It's described as Italy's version of a paella, but with minimal ingredients, and with a layer of potatoes on the bottom. It was a little "soupier" than normal, and it's probably because we rush-ordered it, but I still loved the depth of flavors, and the potatoes, which soaked up all of the flavors, reminded me of dishes I used to eat as a kid.
I also really enjoyed the Carciofini Fritti - fried artichokes topped with aged ricotta and a lemon dressing; the Malloreddus al Sugo di Cinghiale (Sardinian cavatelli with wild boar ragu), and the Fave e Cicoria (purée of fava beans, chicory, EVOO - fava beans are very popular in Italy!).
What a treat to be able to dine on such incredible Italian food!
