As a big fan of soup dumplings or xiaolongbao, I was super excited to hear about Mr. Dough's opening. I was already making plans to go when the first yelp reviews started rolling in. As the reviews were poor, I decided to wait. About a month after opening, the reviews looked better so I took my daughter to ultimately decide for ourselves.
We decided to get the Signature Q Buns - pan fried soup dumplings with a crispy outside filled with pork, green onion, and house seasoning; the signature pork steamed xiaolongbao, and the sweet egg custard buns. We saw other customers enjoying hot pots with noodles that looked really good as well.
The custard buns came out first so we started with that. The bun on the outside is soft and fluffy and the hot filling reminded me of the topping of a Chinese pineapple bun (IYKYK). They were very yummy. Next, the Q buns arrived. The first thing I noticed were how big they were. I tried one plain without any shoyu or vinegar. The taste of the filling is good, but I was a little thrown off by the texture. Also mine did not have any soup in it, but my daughter had in hers as the soup squirted out when she took a bite. I think I would have enjoyed mine more if the soup hadn't leaked out.
Finally, the xiaolongbao. Again, they were bigger than bite sized which is what I am used to and the wrappers are a little too thick for my taste. My daughter, on the other hand, loved everything and would be happy to eat there again. Just goes to show, it comes down to personal taste.
Mr. Dough is located in the former MW restaurant space next to Pho Saigon. The service was great. They are open Tuesday through Sunday.
