I, like many others, have never given much thought to honey bees and their role in our food system. It wasn't until a few years back did I start reading more about the challenges the honey bees face and how important they are to our food supply.
There are some people doing much more than reading about the honey bees, however, like Chef Alan Wong and Dr. Lorna Tsutsumi of UH-Hilo, who co-founded the Adopt-a Beehive with Alan Wong program.
Through this program, donors can "adopt-a-beehive," with funds going towards research, student scholarships, training, business support, and so much more. And yes - donors do get honey!
I had the honor of participating in an event with Na`au to thank all the donors for the Adopt-a-Beehive program, where food and drink included the program's honey as an ingredient.
A few of the food and drink offered - all of which contained Adopt-a-Beehive with Alan Wong Honey:

There were also products made with honey, as well as bee and honeycomb displays.
Scholarships were awarded, raffle prizes were given away, and guests were able to tour the UH Farm grounds, where the event took place.
There were even horses that kids and adults could ride!
It was a great event for an even greater cause.
