There only a few restaurants on Oahu that specialize in okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancake) .. Yaki Yaki Miwa being one of them. I like that they're located outside of Waikiki, and they have customer parking behind the restaurant. Note - the parking is not free. You have to scan the QR code on the red signs that are posted in the parking lot, and prepay for parking based on time. We paid $3 for 2 hours of parking. After 6 pm, you can park on the street for free.
Here, the chefs prepare your meal on the main L-shaped teppanyaki grill, then deliver your food to your table and place it on the warm griddle in the middle of your table. This ensures that your food stays hot while you enjoy it.
The best way to dine here is family style. Here's what four of us shared this evening:
Sweet Onion Salad |
Grilled Vegetables |
Pork Negiyaki |
Top: Cheese Tama Bottom: Seafood Modan-yaki |
Regular Sobameshi |
Mira's Toast with Ice Cream |
We tried three different variations of okonomiyaki - Cheese Tama (pork and cheese), Pork Negiyaki (green onion, fishcake, konjac, dried shrimp, okonomiyaki batter), and Seafood Modan-yaki (noodles, assorted seafood). I really liked the Negiyaki and Modan-Yaki. The sobameshi is the best of both worlds - stir fried noodles and fried rice, all in one dish!
For dessert, do not pass on the Toast with Ice Cream. It's made with pillowy soft shokupan bread from Epi Bakery - really good!
Reservations are highly recommended. Open 5 pm - 11 pm. Closed Tuesdays.
